» CHARACTER INFORMATION

Character NAME: Yuusei Fudou
Canon & MEDIUM: Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s (anime)
Canon PULL-POINT: Mid-episode 151 (highlight for spoilers: after he defeats Z-ONE and is on his way to Ark Cradle’s Momentum, but before Z-ONE catches up with him)
Character AGE: 19

Character ABILITIES:

Starting with more mundane skills, Yuusei is a dueling prodigy -- there are hardly any situations in which he couldn’t find a way out of a pinch in a game, all thanks to his experience, flexibility with strategy and ability to read his opponents. Following that, he’s a genius mechanic and hacker, which means that given enough time and materials he’s able to fix, build and program a wide range of things. Finally, he’s somewhat skilled in hand-to-hand combat, to an extent -- he’s never undergone any formal martial arts training, only what he’s picked up on the streets of Satellite.

Now, let’s move on to the fun part: namely, the more supernatural abilities he possesses. Yuusei is a “Signer” -- an individual chosen by an ancient Dragon Star God, known as the Crimson Dragon, to protect the world from possible dangers. To reverse the saying, with great responsibility come great powers, as well as a personal partner in the form of one of the Signer Dragons who serve the Crimson Dragon. Said Dragons take the form most befitting the times they need to fight in, and as such manifest as Duel Monsters cards in the case of 5D’s. Interestingly, while Yuusei does not possess the power to materialize the holographic monsters as some other characters do, Stardust Dragon does gain the ability to interact on a physical level with the surroudings at times when the plot demands it (examples being real damage in the duel against Jack or shielding other people from the attack of Black Rose Dragon in the duel against Aki). As each of the Signers appears to have a variety of powers, most of which sadly go unexplained in canon, I’ll do my best to give a brief summary of them below:

  • Dragon Birthmarks: each of the Signers has a crimson red mark on their right forearm, depicting one of the Crimson Dragon’s bodyparts; Yuusei originally owned Dragon’s Tail, but it was replaced by Dragon’s Head during an important battle. The birthmarks activate under certain conditions and/or when exposed to certain powers (such as the presence of a god, for example) by glowing with bright, red light and causing the bearer to feel throbbing pain in their arm.

  • Crimson Dragon summoning: When gathered together, two or more Signers can summon their god, the Crimson Dragon, into the human world. Notably, they don’t do this consciously, but it’s rather that the god answers the collective call of their hearts and appears when its Signers truly need its help. Being a god, Crimson Dragon has shown to possess powers beyond comprehension -- including, but not limited to revival of people and sending Yuusei back in time to have him prevent the history from changing and thus save the current timeline.

  • Signers’ bond: all Signers share a very strong bond, which allows them to “sense” one another to some extent; they would feel pain whenever the others are in danger or suffering either physically or mentally. Likewise, they could be “guided” to find the others’ location, though it’s not always precise. Finally, they can temporarily lend each other their powers -- something Yuusei frequently does, “borrowing” the others’ birthmarks and assambling them on his back, forming the complete seal of the Crimson Dragon.

  • Signers’ shields: when in danger, a Signer would often become surrounded by a sphere of red light; this is not controlled by the Signer and they don’t have to be aware of incoming danger for it to activate. People in the close vicinity to the Signer would also be protected by this “shield”, and, under certain circumstances, even if they’re farther away but the Signer wishes to protect them and the Crimson Dragon answers that call. This protection has been shown to activate against powers of Earthbound gods, fire, gravity, memory alternation caused by history falsification origining from time travel, among others. However, judging from Yuusei’s experience, it doesn’t always work, even when needed -- it didn’t protect him from getting a metal shrapnel thrusted into his guts or when falling down the canyon. Sucks to be him, I know.

Yuusei also possesses the power of Clear Mind, which is described as an ability to control Momentum -- a wide-spread energy generation system -- with one’s heart. It also allows a person to perform Accel Synchro Summon during a Riding Duel (please refer to the history section for details). However, in order to perform it, certain conditions must be met: firstly, the person’s mind must be “clear” psychically, which is to say they need to be completely focused on the task on hand and have no doubt in their heart. Second requirement is speed, as that is the only time when it can be used.

He’s also able to perform a developed version of the above, Over Top Clear Mind, leading to Limit Over Accel Synchro. Short description: Yuusei flies into the stratosphere, kinda like that freefall guy, except he does it on a flying motorcycle, and then turns golden while using the power of friendship to summon a giant dragon. Afterwards, he collects the wishes of every person on the planet in his hands and with that, he manages to pull off a godly card game combo because he’s a motherfucking Jesus. Long version: ... actually, the above about covers it. It’s basically a more fancy variation of the original Clear Mind, with an additional requriement being that in order to sucessfully use it, the person must strongly believe in their own potential to surpass their limits, as well as in the bonds they have with other people.

Character HISTORY:

Seeing as this section turned out to be one giant wall of text (17 pages long, I'm not kidding), I decided to put it in a journal here in order to keep the application from getting too clustered (pun not intended).

Character PERSONALITY:

Yuusei Fudou is a man of few words. Quiet and calm most of the time, he's known and respected by many for his ability to remain cool and collected even in the most stressful situations. He's not an overly talkative type, and when he does speak, he usually does so in a very blunt, matter-of-fact way, which in some cases may almost come off as offensive, whether intended or not. He's confident, but not overly so -- he knows where his limits are and won't pretend otherwise. Although, let's be honest: he's a genius. A skilled duelist, D-Wheeler, mechanic and hacker -- being all of those and more despite being raised in an extremely poor town with hardly any education can definitely prove it. He's a hard-worker, too, and once he focuses on something (usually concerning mechanics), you can be sure it will get done. In fact, he may become too absorbed in his projects sometimes, which is where he pays little attention to such things as eating or sleeping or even other people, but it only confirms his determination and strong will. Being a strategist and possessing an analytic mind, Yuusei doesn't make hasty decisions, but rather considers all possible courses of action and their outcomes before acting. That is not to say he doesn't take his instinct into consideration -- quite the opposite, he follows it along with careful calculations, and he's not afraid to take great risk if he considers it necessary. Those traits, along with the charisma one would probably not expect of a silent person like him, make him a rather capable leader, should a need for that arise.

The fact he's always so serious and reticent may lead one to believe he's cold and unapproachable to others... and if they do assume that, they couldn't be more wrong. You see, Yuusei was named after a particle in planetary gear that binds all other parts, with a thought that he would become a person who would bring people together -- and he certainly does live up to his name. There is nothing he values more than bonds with other people, family and friends in particular. Granted, he's not very talkative and may feel restless or become slightly overwhelmed by big social events, but that doesn't prevent him from making friends -- or at least earning people's trust and respect -- fairly easy. It shouldn't come as a surprise, though, as only knowing him for a short while will reveal that he's a loyal and trustworthy friend who's not afraid to put himself in harm's way in order to protect people he cares for. Another reason for it is that Yuusei seems to understand people's feelings really well. He's very emotionally perceptive and can tell when a person is hurting -- and what's even more important, he's always willing to help them in any way he can, even if they're complete strangers. This combination of empathy, genuine concern and compassion is what has won him the favor of many people.

Having grown up in what was basically a junkyard, Yuusei has learned and still strongly believes that nothing and no one in the world is useless, which is why he becomes irritated with people who call others (or their cards) "scum", "trash" and alike. Those who belittle and speak ill of other people's dreams, hopes and beliefs in front of him should be prepared to face his controlled, yet dangerous anger. While he's not prone to using violence, he will not hesitate to use it if needed, either, as he's well-aware that sometimes it's the only (or simply the fastest) way to solve the problem. And while we're at that, let's face it: he's not the shining example of obeying the law, either. Due to his experiences with unjust and outward cruel law enforcement, he has no faith or trust in the authority, and therefore doesn't find it morally unacceptable to go against it, especially when his friends and/or the bonds he has with them are at the stake.

While never the one to judge others, Yuusei is rather quick to take the blame on himself, even in instances where he isn't directly involved, such as when Kiryu was arrested or the Zero Reverse incident, which was caused by his father invention. He's never quite gotten over the feeling of guilt in the latter case, which is only made worse due to his being haunted by the nightmares of said tragedy. Although generally pretty difficult to upset, whenever the topic of his faults (or better said, things he perceives as such) comes up, he may lose his concentration on the current task on hand and sink into melancholy, though he's usually able to overcome the worst part, either thanks to his friends telling him to get himself together or his own resolve. In the end, no matter what hardships arise on his way, he never gives up; however, he accepts defeats and learns from them, which makes him even stronger.

Chosen WEAPON:

His weapon, chosen from the armory, will be a simple (visually, at least) single-action, six-shots revolver, much like the Duel Disks used in Crash Town. However, there’s a trick to it, as there’s no need to load bullets to this one -- there would always be at least one in the chamber. In fact, at the beginning, there would only be one, with the rest of chambers getting filled with different types of bullets over the course of time, following the growth of Yuusei, the weapon and -- you guessed it -- his bonds with other people. As he grows closer to others and develops the will to help and protect them, new bullets, each representing the bond he shares with one of the other Signers/Signer Dragons. The bullets are as follows:

  • blue (representing Yuusei himself; available from the start): the most simple one, as it functions the same way traditional bullets do, except flies at a slightly higher speed and leaves a trace of stardust behind. Fancy.

  • red (representing the bond with Jack): creates a powerful wave that may burn the target upon contact; the sucky part is it causes a surprisingly stong recoil which may (and surely will) harm an unexperienced user; relating to Jack’s Red Demon’s Dragon’s nature.

  • orange (representing the bond with Crow): creates a sort of barrier that deflects attacks back to the enemy, mimicing Crow’s Blackfeather Dragon’s effect.

  • violet (representing the bond with Aki): creates a strong gale capable of knocking a person over. The downside is Yuusei isn’t protected against this effect, mimicing the effect of Aki’s Black Rose Dragon.

  • green (representing the bond with Ruka): replenishes a person’s health (think an equivalent of taking a rest), but wouldn’t help the actual physical problem (can’t close a gushing wound, for example), relating to Ruka’s Ancient Fairy Dragon’s nature.

  • yellow (representing the bond with Rua): heals small wounds, but doesn’t fix the negative effects of having them in the first place (for example, may close a wound but won’t change the fact blood loss happened), relating to Rua’s Life Stream Dragon’s nature.

  • While it may appear convenient, it’s not all that easy to handle; although the revolver itself is fairly light, it does put a significant strain (mostly psychical, as at first it would require a great deal of focus to ensure the right bullet is chosen -- and no one wants to accidentally shoot a comrade instead of killing them, much less Yuusei -- it would become more instinctive along with training; however, phisical exhaustion could also happen, especially in cases where it’s part of the effect) on the user and would require time and devotion to get a hang of. Thus, in the beginning, it would be impossible for Yuusei to fire more than one bullet without resting some between shots. Additionally, should there be any trace of doubt in his heart, the gun wouldn’t fire at all, in a similar fashion to how he failed to perform Accel Synchro Summon in his duel against Placido.

    The reason why I would like to go with this (hopefully not overly) creative weapon is that I’d like to play with the concept of Clustering Wishes, which allowed Yuusei to use the powers of his friends’ dragons thanks to their close bonds; that’s why the bullets’ effects are based on the effects of Signer Dragons themselves. Also, since his bonds with his friends are the most important thing to Yuusei, it makes sense to incorporate that aspect of his character into his weapon.

    Character INVENTORY:

    Clothing: his usual attire, consisting of tank top, jeans, jacket, gloves and boots;
    Cards: two decks of Duel Monsters playing cards, one for ground duels and another for riding ones;
    General: his Duel Disk; a cell phone (which probably won’t be of much use anymore); Antinomy's broken glasses;

    » SAMPLES

    First PERSON:

    [There's a new face on the video feed here, and that is the face of a somewhat troubled young man. He's not looking at the camera at the moment, instead looking around his surroundings with a thoughtful expression.]

    This world has been through a lot, too...

    [Without a single word of explanation on what he's meant, Yuusei turns to the camera to address any possible viewers directly.]

    If there's a conflict, I'd like to help resolve it, even if it's in a world other than my own. These methods, however...

    [He makes a pause, frowning and looking down a bit. "War" or "changing the past"... Even for him, it's hard to tell which of those he dislikes more; it's probably a little bit of both that makes him feel this anxious.

    The duelist lifts his head, speaking up once again.]

    ... If possible, I'd like to speak with people who have been in this place for a while already. I have a few questions I'd appreciate answers to.

    Thank you in advance.

    Third PERSON:

    How ironic.

    Just a few hours ago, Yuusei had been fighting with all his might against the Yliaster not only to save the world, but also to prove one thing: that the past cannot be changed, as messing with it brings nothing but destruction. That the future can be changed without the need for interferring with the history. That’s what he-- no, the entire Team 5D’s stood for and believed in from the bottom of their hearts, and Yuusei would certainly not let their efforts go to waste.

    ... And yet there he was, trapped in an unfamiliar world so different from his own, despite certain similarities. About to get involved in a war he wasn’t a part of; although, if the words of the Initiative were to be believed, his very own world was in danger of becoming dragged into it as well. The duelist didn’t trust the Initiative, oh no -- it wouldn’t be like him to put his faith into his kidnappers, regardless of their assurance of good will, at least not right away. However, that wasn’t the part that bothered him the most -- what he found the most troubling was the fact he was now expected to take part in changing the past, something he was strongly opposed to and had been trying to prevent from happening back in his world. Z-ONE would have probably called such turn of events “fate”, but Yuusei didn’t believe in such things. He, his friends, the citizens of Neo Domino City, and every other person in the world -- all of them had both the right and ability to form their destiny with their own hands, and no one would be able to convince the duelist otherwise.

    So what else was left for him other than form his destiny there?

    Letting out a small sigh, the Signer carefully put the cylinder back in the revolver, which he had been absentmindedly playing with for a while to keep his hands occupied. Of course, there was that, too -- his new “weapon” that the Initiative had provided him with. He couldn’t say it was something he was entirely comfortable with, but on the other hand, he didn’t feel too uneasy while holding it, either. Perhaps it would sound strange to some, but it was kind of as if there was a pre-existing bond between them, something Yuusei couldn’t quite grasp or explain yet...

    With a short twirl of the gun on his finger, the duelist slid it back into the holster resting on his tight.

    He could only hope the day when he would need to use it against another human being would never come.
